Audition for pilobolus

Pilobolus is looking for dancers with strong athleticism, theatrical physicality, and partnering skills who are willing to bare it all—sometimes even literally—on the stage or even the woods! Boldness, curiosity, and a deep desire for creative collaboration are coveted. 

Requirements:

  • Dancers must be eligible to work for a US-based employer and hold a valid passport

  • Must be available for rehearsals in Washington, CT

  • Must be willing and capable to travel domestically and internationally for performances

Contract: Minimum 20 weeks employment contract


HOW TO AUDITION

Our audition process will run in three phases: 1) first round auditions (video or in-person); 2) callback in NYC; and 3) final callback in Washington, CT for those who make it through phases 1 and 2. After each phase, we will contact all auditionees for next steps. Please read below for information about the process and associated dates and deadlines.

FIRST ROUND AUDITIONS:

Determine how you would like to audition: by video or in person. You must select only one method and may not do both. Video and in-person NYC auditionees will be evaluated as part of the first round auditions.

    Step 1. Review and learn this short movement phrase.

    Step 2. Record one video that includes: you dancing this phrase AND 30 seconds of unedited improvisation AND 3 silly walks. State and spell your full name at the beginning of the video. (We are not looking at production value, please use any means of recording in any location.)

    Step 3. Upload your video to Vimeo or YouTube. Create a sharable link to include on your application form.

    Step 4. Complete the application form. You must include your headshot, resume/CV, and video link.

    Step 2. Review and learn this short movement phrase. Be prepared to perform this  phrase on site with minimal instruction. You will also be asked to perform a 30-second improvisation.

SECOND ROUND CALLBACK - NYC:

Date: May 5, 2024, 10AM
Location: 287 E 10th St., Studio 5, New York, NY 10009
Time and specific location details will be disclosed in the invitation email or in person.

Dancers invited to return for second round audition will be informed as follows:

  • Video auditionees will be alerted via email by April 15

  • In-Person NYC auditionees will be alerted on audition day, May 4, if they will be invited to return

 

THIRD ROUND CALLBACK:

Date: May 6, 2024
Location: Washington, CT

Dancers selected for our final auditioning phase will be informed by the end of the second round callback on May 5. At that time, they will receive specific timing information for getting to CT. Travel costs via Metro-North to Brewster Station are the responsibility of the auditionee; Pilobolus will provide pickup at Brewster Station, and return to Brewster Station following the third round callback.

WORK WITH US

  • PSM will be responsible for maintaining integrity of performances as designed throughout the tour.

    Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    • Generating show paperwork (cue sheets, run sheets, running orders, signage, etc.

    • Building Qlab files for upcoming shows

    • Hospitality & FOH advances with each venue along with onsite hospitality & FOH coordination

    • Driving of company van or rented vans and trucks to some select tour stops

    • Adapt staging/set up to local conditions in consultation with Lighting Supervisor

    • Supervise local crew in some of the following departments: Audio/Video, laying of dance floor, props, and/or wardrobe. Exact division of labor is dependent upon programming in the current tour and skills of the specific touring crew at that time.

    • Coordinating and running technical rehearsals in collaboration with Dance Captain

    • Overseeing sound monitor placement on stage and setting sound levels with local AV Technician

    • Running sound and video cues during performances and calling all other cues

    • Writing and sending show and venue reports

    • Coordinating company travel days.

    • Tracking receipts and submitting monthly expense reports.

    • Updating piece archival documents as needed.

    • Filing and organization of piece Qlab files, show & venue reports.

    Ideal candidate's qualities include:

    • Valid driver’s license

    • Valid passport

    • Good personal and communication skills

    • Collaborative attitude

    • Touring experience

    • Stage management experience in dance

    • Proficiency with Qlab

    Company is based in northwest CT and preference will be given to candidates based in the northeast United States. Contract begins in September/October, but ideal training takes place in July/August to overlap with outgoing PSM. Current contract is for domestic touring in the 24/25 season but there is potential for additional work on special engagements, events, or international tours. This position is part-time and the schedule is based on the company's touring schedule.

    Salary is $200 per working and travel day with overtime provisions. Position is paid biweekly as a W2 employee and a Lifestyle Benefit stipend is available for those eligible.

  • Lighting Supervisor will oversee the integrity of piece lighting designs throughout the tour.

    Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    • Generate lighting paperwork for each venue (light plots, line set schedule, color schedule, channel hookup, instrument schedule)

    • Advance with each venue along with General Manager

    • Work with Lighting Designers when creating New Work to best serve designs within rep plot and touring constraints

    • Driving of company van or rented vans and trucks to some select tour stops

    • Adapt staging/spacing/lighting to local conditions in consultation with PSM

    • Supervise local lighting crew

    • Participate in technical rehearsals and lighting dailies in collaboration with Dance Captain & PSM (and/or Artistic Directors when applicable)

    • Run lighting console during performances

    • Update show paperwork as necessary (piece information sheets, cue sheets, run sheets)

    Ideal candidate's qualities include:

    • Valid driver’s license

    • Valid passport

    • Good personal and communication skills

    • Collaborative attitude

    • Touring experience

    • Lighting design and lighting supervisor experience in dance

    • Proficient with Vectorworks, Lightwright, and ETC consoles
